Why Are Most People’s Music Tastes Stuck when They Went to Junior and Senior High School?

I have noticed that most people LIKE ONLY music from the time they were 12 to 25.  If they are an open type of personality, they may tolerant a few songs from a later era.

After that, they get stuck.  Before that isn’t an interest either.  I will be the first to admit that opera and symphonic music is enjoyed by a small group of listeners and then even has sub groups.   How many people would even know who was Wagner, much less listen to the entire Ring Cycle, except for the The Ride of the Valkyries because has been used in popular culture for dramatic events like the last of Michael Jackson’s concerts and Apocalypse Now, The Wire, and most recently House of Cards.

I think every age had great music and clunkers.  Big Band, Blues,  Mo-Town, Folk, Blue Grass,  Glitter Rock,  Jazz, Peruvian pipes,  reggae, and rhythm  and blues,  can’t be explored during the short, frantic, self absorbed period of adolescence.

As Patrick Dennis’ Auntie Mame said, “Life is a banquet and most poor ### are starving to death!”

Don’t starve you ear, listen to music written in the current decade and 5 decades ago.  Expand your musical palate!  Don’t be a dog in the Musee’ du Orsay.

Dogs only see shades of black and white, not color
